The Silent Addiction

We talk about drugs and smoking
But we don't talk about the bottles nestled in the ceramics cupboard
Next to the plates and school lunch boxes
Red or white
Served with tea every night

It's become so normal
Dry January then we go back to our habits,
For the rest of the year
Every year it does more damage
But there's not let up
When it's time to change our diet,
We talk about our sugar intake or eating less
But never the liquid that intoxicates us

My friend spent two hundred pound in a month on alcohol
She laughed it off
But judged me for my morning mocha
Why as a society, are we so far off?
