Galen Rupp's Inspiring Return to the Chicago Marathon

Updated: Dec 19, 2025

A Solid Comeback

Galen Rupp returned to the streets of Chicago to run two hours and nine minutes in yesterday's Chicago Marathon, earning him a 16th place finish. This race marked a significant comeback for Rupp, as it was his first marathon since the US Olympic Trials in February 2024.

The 2017 Chicago Marathon champion ran the first 5k in exactly fifteen minutes. He then alternated between 15:09 and 15:18 for the next fifteen kilometres. This strong start positioned him to split one hour, four minutes, and seven seconds at the halfway mark. However, his pace eventually dropped to just over five minutes per mile for the final seven miles.

A Journey of Resilience

Speaking before the race, Rupp expressed that this was the healthiest he had been in years. After undergoing surgery last year, he has worked hard to regain his form. Rupp emphasized that this marathon was just the starting point in his quest to reach the 2028 Olympics. He aims to represent his country in a fifth Olympic Games.

With this in mind, Rupp's long-held belief in his ability to improve his marathon personal best raises an intriguing question. Is it unrealistic to envision Galen Rupp back on marathon podiums and adding a third Olympic medal to his collection?

Looking to the Future

As Rupp sets his sights on the 2028 Olympics, many are excited to see where his journey takes him. His passion for the sport and determination to succeed are qualities that resonate with many.

In conclusion, Galen Rupp's return to the Chicago Marathon is more than just a race; it's a story of resilience and hope. With his sights set on the future, Rupp will continue to push boundaries and inspire others along the way.
