Alex Wei Has Done It Again.

Originally published May 18, 2025

The YouTuber has dropped another video.

As some of you may be aware, I heavily referenced Alex Wei and his story on how AI took his job in an article I wrote earlier this year. I have been watching his videos since and while they are all good, this one is article material.

'Modern Work Is Breaking Everyone.' For a generation where finding your place in society is harder than ever, Wei is a calming and reassuring voice. One of the few authentic voices left on YouTube. Someone who makes you feel heard. I have made it well documented that I quit my first office job in February and Wei's new video expresses many feelings I shared during my time.

First we will start with the process of finding a job though. Something I have had to experience in these last few months. Fake interviews separated from one's actual personality and CVs read and discarded in seconds. 'It's not about who you are, it's about who you can pretend to be.' Wei states in the video, which could not be more true. Furthermore, in 2025, you are competing against a globalised workforce and AI bots (our best friend). I have not made any meaningful progress on landing a new job yet.

Another great point made in the video is that job applications are unpaid labour in itself. You spend hours and hours on the process, adapting and specialising for each job you apply for. A girl I met in work told me she applied for seventy jobs across five months and received zero interviews. She only got the job she was working because her dad was working there, the same reason I got the job. How do you gain experience when even the entry level jobs require experience? You apply and might not even get an answer and if you do it is a long way down the road. I received a notification on LinkedIn the other day that my application had been viewed. It had been so long I didn't even know what I had applied for or where. It turned out I had applied to be a content creator on 13th March. The first sign of any correspondence I received was to advise my application had been viewed on 10th May. Followed by a swift rejection email the next day. I waited two months to have my application rejected in seconds. 'A rigged game becoming more and more unplayable.' The YouTuber says. These words make me feel heard and understood. It feels good to know it is not just you feeling this way.

I wax taxed very little as it was my first job but for most people you pay tax and don't see any benefit from losing that money. It is spent on foreign wars while public transportation crumbles and moving out of your parents' house becomes harder by the day. As a young adult who lives with their parents I do not have any major expenditures but I did not realise how much you have to spend until watching Wei's latest video. Rent/ mortgage, groceries, petrol, insurance, electricity and WIFI. This leaves most people with just enough to spend on small comforts that keep them distracted from aiming for better in life. Jobs aim to keep you mentally well enough to keep going back but not much more than that. So when you are in my position where you are yet to have any major responsibilities, the distractions of materialism and short term pleasure wear off quick and you want out. My friend lives on his own and can't afford to quit or lose his job as he would be unable to pay his rent. Even working thirty seven hours a week he still relies on financial support from his parents sometimes to keep his head above the water. There is only a year age difference between us but when you pick up responsibilities it can be easy to become trapped.

The video talks about losing sight of your dreams and some of the skills you have learnt when you start adulting. Something I can relate to first hand. If you have read my short story 'I Ran Into The 9-5.' you will know I started working to support my dream financially but I no longer had the energy to pursue the reason I started working. You have to come to a compromise. It is a gradual process with a moment of realisation that your dream is in a much worse position now than it was twelve months ago. You live through a steady stagnation and decline without realising.

Work is not the problem as it gives us meaning. But the results of work are no longer guaranteed. Are you guaranteed to buy your own home in this generation? Do you really take pride in what you are doing? My dad thinks I am wasting my life because I am not working. The reality is quite different. I was wasting my life working and now I am finding my meaning and purpose. We hear and see people who work all their life and are insecure in multiple ways when retirement hits and regret their life choices. 'We want to live a life that feels real.' Are we wrong for wanting to live life on our own terms? There is no guarantee that living life on your own terms will bring success but as Wei said 'I would rather take that risk than quietly dissolve into a system that was never made for me in the first place.' I shared my story in the comment section and even in the replies someone told me their story of working for big companies and regretting the path they took.

Alex has created a channel and community aware of the bigger picture. A community questioning modern society and hoping to change their path but also a place where people can speak from a place where they can relate and relay advice to those who are just embarking on their journey as an adult. For that, Alex deserves much more credit than he receives. The video sits at twelve thousand views after one day. Content with no meaning receives ten times more views. If you are happy in life, I am happy for you. If you relate to this article and Wei's video then I recommend watching the whole thing. I would also recommend watching:
